Apple Certified Macintosh Technician Training – Dec., 2013

Back in Mid-December I took part in an ACMT training course. This course was taught by a company called Crywolf and was hosted right in the technology office for 7 days. After taking this course I am officially an Apple Certified Macintosh Technician. What this means is I have been trained on all aspects of Mac computers and I can repair devices without voiding the warranties.

I learned a few little tips that I can share with you from my course. I have posted them below with a brief description and some quick instructions for each one.

Using Apple ID for Password Recovery:
Description:
You can use your Apple ID to recover your user account password if you forget it. You can use this feature on any Mac computer running an operating system that is less than 2 years old(This includes the computers you may have bought from MLTI last year).
Instructions:
1.)Open System Preferences
2.)Open “Users & Groups” Pane
3.)Click the “Set” button next to Apple ID
4.)Enter your Apple ID and Password to your Apple ID

Performing an SMC reset
Description:
This is a reset of the System Management Controller(SMC). What the SMC does is it controls all aspects of power in the computer. If you ever seem to have issues with your battery or fans running fast you may need to perform an SMC reset. Below are the instructions for doing so on an older white MacBook.
Instructions:
1.)Shutdown your white MacBook
2.)When the computer is completely off press and hold the power button until the sleep light flashes quickly
3.)When it starts flashing quickly release the power button and allow computer to turn on

Changing Scroll Direction
Description:
In the newer version of Mac Operating Systems the default scroll direction is called “Natural”. Natural scroll direction is the opposite direction of how scrolling has always been in the past. This effects both scrolling from the trackpad and from the scroll wheel on a mouse. I am going to show you how to turn that feature off.
Instructions:
1.)Open System Preferences
For Trackpad:
2.)Open the Trackpad Pane
3.)Go to “Scroll & Zoom” tab
4.)Uncheck the “Scroll direction: Natural” Box
For Mouse
2.)Open Mouse Pane
3.)Uncheck the “Scroll direction: Natural” Box

Time Machine Backup
Description:
There is a utility built into almost all Mac computers that allows you to easily keep a backup of all your files to an external hard drive. If you have an external hard drive that you would like to save a backup of all your files to, this is a good utility to use. The purpose of this would be to avoid losing any of your files and data in the case of a hardware failure or software corruption.
Instructions:
1.)Plug your External Drive into a USB port on the computer
2.)Open System Preferences
3.)Open Time Machine Pane
4.)Click the “Select Backup Disk…” Button
5.)Choose the external drive you would like to use
6.)Click the “Use Disk” Button

I believe this training was great benefit and I hope you got something out of it as well.
