“Current Thinking on Bullying and Cyberbullying” presented by Susan Brooks-Young and Dan Morris provided an overview of bullying behavior and how educators can take steps to change school culture in which bullying is prevalent. Special attention was given to cyberbullying, which is an increasing issue in schools today.
Of particular interest to me was research that indicated schools can most effectively change school culture and eliminate bullying behavior by harnessing the power of the student body. Researchers identified “connectors,” or students within the school who other students look to for support and as natural mentors. Using these natural leaders within the student body, researchers created a low-key anti-bullying campaign that included PSAs and posters featuring these students. This campaign was far more effective at changing student perception of bullying because the message came from respected peers rather than as a mandate from administrators.
