I loved this session! In fact, I could totally use the lessons that were shared in class next week.
I learned about a documentary called Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World (available for free on Amazon Prime). And a series of lessons that were developed by TeachRock.org to accompany segments of the film. The idea behind the film is to chronicle the impact of tribal music and American Indian performers on American pop and rock music. Stevie Sala, an American Indian musician who has performed with George Clinton and Rod Stewart), wanted to create a documentary that provided youths with examples of role models from the American Indian community. The accompanying lessons developed by TeachRock.org tackle concepts like cultural appropriation and what it means to “get through” when a community is dealing with cultural genocide. These lessons are linked to national literacy and social studies standards.
