In this world of cutting edge technology, there can often be times where technology surpasses the hands on instruction needed, to not only introduce, but reinforce skills necessary for lifetime success. At the great big world of SXSWedu, I found an incredible piece of technology that fits so well into the curriculum of elementary education. While some may consider this technology on the “low” side of cutting edge, what made this product so enticing to me personally, was the ease of instruction it took to not only introduce the product, but also to follow up with daily on-the-fly assessments. The Easy Read Time Teacher company has created two very easy to use variations, that will teach students how to tell time in two to three very easy step
The first clock face teaches students a simple two-step method:
1. Read the number at the end of the short hand
2. Read the number at the end of the long hand
The second clock face teaches students a three step method:
1. Read the number at the end of the long hand
2. Say whether the long hand is pointing to the “minutes to” or “minutes past” side
3. Read the number at the end of the short hand
Some may think that “how is really going to help me?” Try asking a grade 2 teacher how challenging it can be to teach these skills to young people, and they will let you know.
